A Day in the Life of a Care Worker: Stories That Stay with You

Every day as a care worker is different

But one thing remains constant the connection I feel with the people I care for. Let me take you through a typical day, filled with small moments that make this work so meaningful.

My morning begins with Mrs. LA, a retired teacher with dementia. She loves routines, so we start with tea and toast, just the way she likes it. As we sit at her kitchen table, she tells me stories about her students—some memories are crystal clear, while others blur at the edges. I don’t mind hearing the same story twice; her eyes light up every time she talks about her classroom, and that’s what matters.

Going beyond the basics

By lunchtime, I’m with Mr. AM, a young man with Down’s syndrome who has a passion for art. Today, we’re working on a painting for his niece’s birthday. As he carefully chooses colours, he tells me about the party and how excited he is to give her his masterpiece. His confidence has grown so much since we started working together, and it’s moments like this that remind me how powerful care can be.

My day ends with Ms. JS, an elderly woman recovering from a fall. She’s fiercely independent, but she appreciates having someone there to help with dinner and keep her company. We chat about her favourite TV shows and laugh about how bad I am at crossword puzzles. Before I leave, she always says, “Thank you for making my day easier,” and it’s the best feeling in the world.

Being a care worker isn’t just a job, it is a journey of connection, resilience, and heart. Every person I meet teaches me something new, and I’m grateful to be a part of their lives. At Cherished Angels Care, we believe that care is about more than support. It is more  about building relationships that truly make a difference.
